Pierre Bruneau’s departure after 46 years of service caused major changes in TVA’s newscasts. Sophie Thibault, who is the antenna manager of the VAT News for 10 p.m. for 20 years, will be in charge of the VAT News from 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., and Pierre-Olivier Zappa will replace her at the end of the evening.
Sophie Thibault will present the news from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. from Monday to Thursday, putting herself in the shoes of her partner Pierre Bruneau, who retires on June 16.
TVA and LCN managing director and publisher Xavier Brassard-Bédard spoke of a “long process” to get to Thursday’s announcements.
“When Pierre Bruneau announced that he was leaving, several hands went up, that’s for sure. It is a historic change and we have not seen it anywhere else in Canada, a news anchor who has been there for almost half a century, in the same position, like Pierre, ”he told QMI Agency.

Another important challenge for Sophie Thibault
A TVA journalist for 34 years, Sophie Thibault became the first woman in North America on May 27, 2002, to serve as the anchor of a major news bulletin, the 10 p.m.
It is a mandate of trust and continuity for her to present TVA at 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.
“It is a magnificent challenge and I enter these great shoes with great humility because it is an event after 46 years of succeeding Pierre Bruneau. I am not replacing Pierre, who is irreplaceable, I am succeeding him. I am moved by the confidence of my bosses”, confesses Sophie Thibault, evoking “a change of life and rhythm” that will lead her to be at the center of important events, even on weekends and during holidays.
“It will be another way of approaching the news in front of TVA 22 h. I am going to try to put my signature on it, we are going to try to create a new version keeping everything that is going well because it is a formidable locomotive, even a TGV. We changed drivers, but the train remains the same, we are not going to stir up the locomotive, ”he continued.
Note that on Friday, at 5 pm and 6 pm on TVA, Julie Marcoux will replace Sophie Thibault.
“We believe it is important to grow our people internally, to show that they are highly competent. We must not forget that we are number 1”, said Xavier Brassard-Bédard.
Big promotion for Pierre-Olivier Zappa
As for Pierre-Olivier Zappa, who has been working at TVA for ten years, it is a great promotion to take stock of the day, from Monday to Thursday, at 10 pm.
“It is a big challenge for me. Pierre and Sophie are people who have always been there for young people. As soon as I arrived, I benefited from your valuable advice, comments, and encouragement. I would say that it is particularly thanks to them that I get this mandate, ”she underlined, greeting his parents in passing, including his father who taught him how to edit when he was very young.
“I want to make a bulletin that is close to people, as I do in the program À Vos affairs”.
The 34-year-old journalist will continue to lead this LCN newspaper, with the support of an expanded team, in addition to attending TVA 22h. At the age of 12, he had read a news bulletin during a break while visiting the LCN studios, which later confirmed his career choice made at the age of 5.
For Michel Jean, who is already in charge of the VAT noon network, will work every day for two hours, from 12 to 14 hours.
